To make a biophilic mini garden in a glass jar for your office, follow these step-by-step instructions to create a beautiful and low-maintenance miniature ecosystem.
Materials Needed
Clear glass jar (preferably with a lid)
Small rocks or pebbles
Activated charcoal (optional)
Potting soil
Moss, succulents, ferns, or air plants
Decorative elements (mini stones, shells, or figurines)
Spray bottle for watering
Steps to Create Your Mini Garden.
Choose and Prepare Your Container
Select a glass jar that is clear and wide enough for easy arrangement of soil and plants.
Ensure it is clean and dry before starting.
Layer the Base for Drainage
Begin by adding a layer of small rocks or pebbles at the bottom of the jar. This will help with drainage and keep the plant roots from sitting in excess water.
Add a Layer of Activated CharcoalSprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal on top of the rocks. Charcoal helps filter water and keeps your mini garden fresh by absorbing odors.
Add Potting SoilAdd a layer of potting soil over the charcoal. The amount depends on the plants you have chosen, but generally one-third to halfway full is ideal. Lightly moisten the soil with a spray bottle before planting.
Arrange and Plant Your Greenery
Gently remove plants from their containers, loosen the roots, and dig small holes in the soil before planting inside the jar. Try arranging different plants for depth and visual interest, considering their growth and sunlight needs.
Add Decorative Touches
Enhance the jar’s appeal by adding moss, small stones, shells, or figurines. Be creative and personalize your garden to fit your workspace style.
Water Lightly and Seal
Mist the plants and moss gently with a spray bottle, being careful not to over water. When finished, place the lid on the jar to create a closed environment, or leave it open for succulents that prefer drier condition.
Place, Monitor, and Maintain
Put the terrarium in a location with indirect sunlight. Direct sun can overheat the jar and damage your plants. Monitor condensation; if there’s too much, air out the jar for a few hours. Water only when condensation ceases or plants droop (usually every couple of weeks).
Maintenance Tips:
Trim any dead or overgrown foliage regularly
Avoid direct sunlight but ensure the spot is bright
Check moisture and water lightly as needed
Re-arrange decor or plants seasonally for freshness
This mini terrarium will help bring a calming, natural vibe to your office space and requires very little upkeep.
